This week has been a blur of amazing events. But among all these once-in-a-lifetime experiences, one simple moment stands out. We were at Bahakwenu Primary School (Elementary) playing games and waiting for the opening ceremony to start when two children grabbed each of my hands and guided me into their classroom with nearly 40 students following shortly behind. In unison they began to recite the poem on their wall. When they were finished reading they moved me to the next poster and began to recite another; some English, some Swahili. I was so moved by those small children with big ambitions and bright minds. Even with 121 third grade children sharing a small classroom, sitting 3 and 4 students to a desk, they are eager to learn. I wish they could understand how special they are! Having lived all my life in America, I have never had the privilege of knowing so many children who honor school. They understand it is a privilege and do not take it for granted; their obedience, attentiveness, and excitement for learning is truly inspiring.
