Flora's Miraculous New Life

In July of 2005, Flora Nzula Mutiso, a 15 year old girl, was riding to school on a bicycle with her younger sister on the back. She suddenly saw a huge elephant charging towards her. She was gored and thrown into the air by the elephant. She narrowly survived and was left badly scarred.01 Flora's newspaper article  02 Flora's scar and woundWith great determination, she slowly recovered. She had been a bright student and was determined to stay in school despite her challenges. She met Kenya Keys, director Rinda Hayes, in 2010, as she was finishing high school. Her speech was still delayed and she was still recovering. (photo 3) She wanted to repeat her senior year in hopes of doing well enough on the national test to qualify to go to university.03 Flora's classic photoBecause of her extreme poverty, she was forced to live in a tiny, completely dark cinderblock room.04 Flora's apartment  04 Flora's compoundShe would study at night by the light of a small oil lamp. Like the other girls in the apartments, she would have to use a common latrine at night, which was a frightening experience.05 Flora's study desk with lamp  06 Flora's public bathroomBut she did it! She did well on her national exam and qualified to go to university!07 Flora's dressed to teachWhile she was waiting, she served as a volunteer teacher. She loved and did well in math and science, which was very unusual for a girl from her area.08 Flora's teachingIn 2011 she left to go to Kasii University to study to become a high school math and chemistry teacher. She was one of the few Kenya Keys students that did well enough to qualify to get a laptop. She thrived in school.09 Flora's going to university  10 Flora's laptopNow she is preparing to graduate in December 2015. Confident, courageous and as determined as ever, Flora is ready to step into the world as a well- qualified teacher. She’ll now be able to lift her family from the grinding poverty from which they have suffered. Not only that, but you can be sure she’ll be an inspiring role model for other girls, as she mentors them and assures them they can succeed too!11 Flora's graduated  12 Flora's graduated
